*🌍 World Environment Day 2025 | Beat Plastic Pollution 🌱*
In Ghana, it is common to wrap banku—a local staple—in flexible plastic films. But have we stopped to consider the health and environmental risks?
Plastics like polyethylene often contain phthalates and BPA, chemicals known to interfere with human hormones. Even worse, reheating food wrapped in plastic can release dioxins and furans, toxic compounds linked to serious health problems.
At ASEc, we are advocating for sustainable, local alternatives—starting with the way we wrap our food. In this video, we demonstrate how plantain leaves, a traditional and biodegradable material, can be used instead of plastic to safely wrap banku—preserving health, heritage, and the environment.
Let’s rethink our everyday choices.
