Thinking of Changing Your Course After 100 Level? Read This First.
For Aspirants who have it in mind to cross to their preferred course after 100 and were admitted into a course with a relatively low JAMB score and are considering switching to another course in 200 Level—especially more competitive ones like Medicine, Nursing, or Law—there are important factors and criteria you must keep in mind.
1. Will Your Current Department Release You?
In most cases, yes—your department will allow you to transfer out. However, this is not automatic, and it depends on departmental policies.
2. Will the New Department Accept You?
Not all departments accept transfers (commonly known as “crossing”). For instance, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is strict, and many times Medicine and Nursing may allow it, but only under specific conditions. Always verify with the department you intend to transfer into.
3. What Is Your CGPA?
Your CGPA plays a major role in determining whether you can cross into a more competitive course.
• A minimum of 4.0/5.0 might work in some cases, especially if the department needs more students.
• However, to significantly increase your chances, aim for at least a 4.5/5.0 CGPA.
• The higher your CGPA, the stronger your application.
4. Your Original JAMB Score Still Matters
Even if you are doing excellently in your current course, your original JAMB score can limit your options.
• For competitive courses like Medicine, Nursing, and Law, you must have scored at least 200 in your JAMB.
• Example: If you were admitted into Pharmacology with a 199 JAMB score and you now wish to switch to Nursing, even a 5.0 CGPA may not help—because you didn’t meet the JAMB requirement for Nursing.
5. Grade Requirements
Some departments have strict grading criteria for transfer students.
• For Medicine or Nursing, having a ‘D’ grade in any course during your 100 Level may disqualify you.
• Most times, only A, B, or C grades are accepted.
• A single ‘D’ can hurt your chances, no matter how strong your CGPA is.

So, Is Crossing Easy?
Yes, it is possible—and many students do it successfully—but it takes:
• Hard work
• Strategic planning
• Consistent academic excellence
If you’re serious about crossing, give it everything you’ve got from your first day in 100 Level.
Interestingly, many students end up falling in love with the course they were initially admitted into. So while you work toward your goal, keep an open mind—you may discover passion and purpose where you are now.
