New to the data center? Let’s always clarify which standard we're using, the Uptime or TIA-942 (via EPI), because standards matter.
1) Uptime Institute – Tier System (I to IV)
Focused mainly on infrastructure topology and availability.
✓Tier I – Basic setup, single path for power/cooling, no redundancy.
✓Tier II – Adds redundant capacity components (e.g., UPS, generators), but still a single path.
✓Tier III – Fully maintainable: systems can be maintained without shutting down operations.
✓Tier IV – Fault-tolerant: fully redundant, separate paths, auto failover, continuous cooling.
2) EPI / TIA-942 – Rated System (Rated-1 to Rated-4)
Based on TIA-942 and includes not only Availability, but also Security, Safety, Cabling, Fire Protection, Physical Infrastructure, etc.
✓Rated-1 – Basic site infrastructure (similar to Tier I).
✓Rated-2 – Redundant components (like Tier II), limited scope.
✓Rated-3 – Concurrently maintainable infrastructure (like Tier III), but includes other domains too.
✓Rated-4 – Fault-tolerant design across all domains (not just power/cooling).
Key Difference:
✓Uptime Tiers = Focus on Power & Cooling Topology
✓EPI/TIA-942 = Broader scope covering multiple disciplines (holistic approach)
