🌍 *Jumuiya Yetu,*
*Mustakabali Wetu*
Martha Karua’s recent deportation from Tanzania, where she intended to observe the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, underscores a pressing concern for all East African Community (EAC) citizens.
🔍 *Why This Matters to Us All*
• *_Democracy Under Threat:_* When political freedoms are suppressed in one member state, it sets a concerning precedent for the entire region.
• *_Youth Unemployment Crisis:_* Over 60% of the EAC population is under 35, with many facing unemployment. Without stable governance, initiatives to address this crisis falter.
• *_Industrial Development Stagnation:_* The EAC’s Industrialisation Policy (2012–2032) aims to boost manufacturing and job creation. However, political instability hampers these goals.
• *_Cultural Unity at Risk:_* Our diverse cultures are a strength. Political oppression threatens the harmony and mutual respect we’ve cultivated across borders.
🤝 *Stand in Solidarity*
Karua’s actions remind us that defending democracy is a collective responsibility. By standing up against oppression, we pave the way for a more prosperous, united and democratic East Africa.
In the East African Community (EAC), a *vibrant and independent opposition* is essential for ensuring democratic accountability, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and fostering inclusive governance across member states. By providing alternative policy perspectives and holding ruling parties accountable, opposition parties contribute to the political stability and integration efforts of the EAC, including the pursuit of a Political Federation.
