CITN Advocates Swift Implementation of Tax Reform Bills to Drive Economic Stability The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has called for the urgent and effective implementation of the tax reform bills currently awaiting presidential assent. The Institute emphasized that timely execution of these reforms is essential to consolidate recent fiscal policy decisions—such as the removal of fuel subsidies—and to chart a path toward long-term economic stability for Nigeria. Speaking at the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Institute held at the Tax Professionals’ House, Alausa, Ikeja, the outgoing 16th President of CITN, Mr. Samuel Agbeluyi, described the pending tax reform bills as "a major positive document that will shape the face of the Nigerian economy." However, he stressed that implementation must precede further amendments, noting that any gaps or inefficiencies identified during execution can be addressed through the annual Finance Act process. “Let’s implement what has been passed into law. The implementation will give us insight into areas that may require some amendment,” Agbeluyi stated during his presidential valedictory address. Leadership Transition and Strategic Highlights This year’s AGM also marked a significant moment of leadership transition, as Mr. Innocent Ohagwa was formally inaugurated as the 17th President of CITN, succeeding Mr. Agbeluyi. Reviewing his tenure, Agbeluyi detailed several milestones and accomplishments of the Institute under his leadership, including: Successful hosting of the 27th Annual Tax Conference, which drew 3,671 participants, making it one of the most attended conferences in the Institute’s history. Establishment of new district societies in Maiduguri, Lafia, and the North American region, reflecting the Institute’s drive to deepen its national and global presence. Admission of 2,836 new members into the tax profession, a testament to the Institute’s robust growth and sustained relevance. Introduction of taxation into the curricula of 27 tertiary institutions across Nigeria, contributing to the institutionalization of tax education. Execution of four professional training cohorts for the Gambia Revenue Authority, signaling regional impact and strategic partnerships within the African tax ecosystem. Strengthened institutional collaborations with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Promotion of gender and youth inclusiveness through the Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) and the Catch Them Young Initiative. The Imperative of Ethical Practice and National Duty In his inaugural speech, Mr. Innocent Ohagwa reaffirmed the ethical responsibilities of tax professionals, urging practitioners to see themselves as stewards of national progress. “Tax is both domestic and foreign. We must do it right. Tax professionals have an obligation to themselves, to their clients, and to the Nigerian society. Tax should be used as a tool to stabilize the economy, enhance competitiveness, and generate revenue,” Ohagwa emphasized. He further called on stakeholders in both the public and private sectors to uphold professionalism, transparency, and patriotism in the discharge of their duties. Looking Ahead Mr. Agbeluyi concluded his address with deep appreciation to CITN members for their support during his tenure and expressed optimism about the Institute’s future. “I am handing over to a good man. The Institute is in safe hands,” he affirmed, expressing full confidence in Mr. Ohagwa’s leadership. The 33rd AGM not only highlighted the strategic direction and achievements of CITN but also underscored the critical role of tax professionals in Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation. As Nigeria continues to navigate its economic reforms, taxation remains a powerful lever—not just for revenue generation, but for economic justice, development, and accountability.
