Rolo, a two‑year‑old Belgian Shepherd of the CRPF’s elite canine squad, lost her life on April 27 during a major anti‑Naxal operation along the Chhattisgarh‑Telangana border. Trained to detect explosives and IEDs, she was conducting a routine search in the dense, treacherous terrain of the Korgotalu hills when an aggressive swarm of bees attacked her. Her handlers attempted to shield her under a polythene cover, but the insects penetrated the barrier and stung her almost 200 times.
Despite immediate first aid, a rushed evacuation, and emergency veterinary care, Rolo succumbed to her injuries before she could reach a medical facility. The CRPF Director General has posthumously awarded her a commendation medal for her courage and sacrifice.
