In a bold interview with Umaru Sanda on Channel One TV, the NPP lawmaker suggested that the ongoing investigation into Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has roots far beyond the agency itself. “The hand behind this is bigger than EOCO. I’ll put it at the doorstep of President Mahama,” he claimed. Wontumi, who was arrested and granted bail in May over allegations of money laundering and fraud, now finds himself at the centre of political and legal crossfire. Though he met his bail conditions, a court drama ensued when his lawyers filed — then swiftly withdrew — a motion to review the GH¢50 million bond. Dr. Afriyie believes these legal troubles may be retaliation for Wontumi’s wild political commentary in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
