Valerian is an herb made from the root of a perennial flower. It is classified as a supplement and is stated to be effective at reducing the time to fall asleep and leading to deeper sleep.
It is stated that Valerian reduces the REM (rapid eye movement) while falling asleep and enhances REM a few hours after falling asleep - which is a must for healthy sleep.
However Valerian is stated to have side effects if taken uncontrolled - such as headaches, dizziness, stomach issues, vivid dreams, or a metallic taste in the mouth. It is also said that Valerian enhances the effect of other medications being taken simultaneously. *Hence, please consult your doctor before starting on Valerian.*
