🦠 Using Bacteriophages to Combat AMR 📍 Background ✅ Antibiotics are losing effectiveness; 5 million die annually from AMR, may double by 2050. ✅ No major pharma investment in new antibiotics due to low financial incentives. 📍 Bacteriophages as Solution ✅ These are “good viruses” that kill bacteria; found in soil, water, gut. ✅ Can be used for burns, UTIs, respiratory infections etc. 📍 Strategies ✅ 1. Isolate bacteria, grow matching phage in lab, administer to patient. ✅ 2. Use pre-engineered phages to match bacteria types. ✅ Phage therapy is being revived, especially in Eastern Europe. 📍 Global Need ✅ No Western country has approved phage as drug yet, but emergency/special access routes exist. ✅ Magistral route in Belgium allows compounded phage medicines per patient.
