On Throwback Thursday
On this day in 1993, Nigeria witnessed what many still regard as its fairest and freest presidential election.
M.K.O. Abiola, candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), emerged victorious over Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). But the historic moment was short-lived as the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the results, sparking national outrage and a wave of pro-democracy movements that changed Nigeria’s political landscape forever.
More than three decades later, June 12 remains a powerful symbol of the people’s will and a reminder of a democracy deferred.
Do you remember where you were on that day?
