Sewage contamination persists in Harare tributary feeding Lake Chivero
Concerns are mounting over a long standing environmental and public health crisis, raw sewage flowing directly into one of the key tributaries of Lake Chivero, the capital's main water source.
The river in question divides Dzivarasekwa and Dzivarasekwa Extension, running just behind Dzivarasekwa 2 High School.
What was once a natural waterway has, for over a decade, turned into an open channel for untreated sewage due to a severely damaged pipeline.
The pipe, which was originally designed to transport waste away from residential areas, is now structurally compromised. With no formal pedestrian crossings between the two suburbs, residents use the pipeline as an improvised footbridge, further damaging it with each passing day.
The consequences of this failure are far-reaching. The river flows into Mukuvisi which then feeds directly into Lake Chivero, a major reservoir that supplies treated water to millions of residents in #harare and surrounding areas. However, the volume of raw sewage and plastic waste entering the lake has made water treatment increasingly difficult and costly.
#lakechivero has long been plagued by pollution from industrial and domestic waste, and experts warn that without urgent infrastructure repair and proper urban planning, Harare could face even more serious water shortages and disease outbreaks in the future.
