There is certainly reason to celebrate Africa Day. When the pioneers of African liberation - leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and later Zimbabwe’s own Cde Robert Mugabe - led the fight for independence in their respective nations, they shared a bold vision: an Africa that is united, self-reliant, and free from external domination. Today, while that vision remains a work in progress, we cannot ignore how far we’ve come. Across the continent, countries have taken courageous steps to reclaim control over their natural resources, assert their sovereignty, and challenge unfair global systems. Zimbabwe, for example, has been at the forefront of land reform and economic empowerment, even under sustained external pressure. Continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) show that Africa is beginning to move with greater unity, steadily breaking down the colonial boundaries that once kept us divided. No, we haven’t yet achieved the full dream - but we are undoubtedly closer than we were. That progress alone makes Africa Day a moment worth commemorating with pride.
