Residents of Thirty-Three Crescent in Glen View 1, Harare, were left stunned and shaken after a turtle mysteriously appeared in the area, wrapped in black cloth and adorned with traditional beads and a weave.
The bizarre sighting took place around local tuckshops last Tuesday and quickly caused a stir in the community.
According to shop owner Molline Murambiza (42), the turtle was first seen early Tuesday morning slowly crawling through the street, looking strangely dressed in spiritual-looking items.
“This turtle showed up in the morning and spent the whole day moving around the shops. People were afraid to touch it. Then on Wednesday, it was still here, until it crawled into one of the closed tuckshops,” said Murambiza.
For two days, the turtle drew curious crowds, with many taking videos and photos. Murambiza suspects the turtle may have been used in witchcraft or by someone trying to scare others.
“No wild turtle dresses itself in beads and is tied with cloth. This must be the work of witches or people trying to settle grudges through spiritual means,” she said.
The closed shop the turtle entered belongs to a woman known as Chihera, who claimed to have no idea about the incident.
“I stopped using that shop a while ago. I only heard today that a turtle went in there,” she said.
Ottillia Mazhindu (39), another resident, also saw the turtle and said the sight was disturbing.
“It’s very unusual to see something like this. It really seems like witchcraft is at play,” she said.
Calex Kamombe (39) added, “We don’t know who dropped it here or why. We are now living in fear for our children and ourselves.”
Tafirenyika Maronje (46), who sells various items nearby, discovered the turtle hiding inside cardboard boxes when he opened the unused tuckshop. He used a stick to remove it, which triggered screams and panic from the onlookers.
As the crowd grew, one man accused some market women and shop owners of using charms to attract customers. Another man, clearly intoxicated and known only as Thanx, dramatically picked up the turtle, threw it into the air, kicked it with a boot, and shouted at journalists to leave.
“You’re taking photos of what? Go before I get you arrested! What’s wrong with this turtle anyway?” he yelled, before walking off with it toward Glen View 1 Shopping Centre.
Meanwhile, Zinatha president George Kandiyero condemned the abuse of the turtle, saying wild animals should not be mistreated.
“Anyone seen harming wildlife should be reported to the police and arrested,” he said, noting that animals like turtles and lizards are often targeted in spiritual practices.
Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for ZimParks, emphasized that harming wild animals is illegal and urged the public to report such incidents to the authorities.
