The elderly woman, identified as Busi Letta Maseko, had reportedly wandered off from her home in the early hours of the morning due to her condition. A video that surfaced on Etwatwa’s community social media page shows her lying helplessly on the ground, surrounded by residents, as one person chillingly announces: “Here is an elderly woman they are saying they are going to burn. They say she is a witch and was found performing rituals at 3am.” Her family is devastated. Maseko’s cousin, Sesana, told local media that the family had long informed neighbours about her condition and even asked the community to assist whenever she went missing. “This time she got lost in the wrong place… we’ll never see her alive again,” Sesana said tearfully. Maseko had lived with dementia for years and was only officially diagnosed last year. The family had been caring for her around the clock since then. Experts say this tragic case highlights the urgent need for dementia education. Welma Geldenhuys, a senior social worker with the Association of Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa, explained: “Dementia is a serious brain condition that affects thinking, memory, and behaviour. It is not madness or witchcraft.”
