*Was just looking for a bank message... & got lost in a sea of random texts.*
Then I wonder what 'P, 'S, T, and 'G'mean in messages now?
You know those unread SMSes that pile up - most of them full of codes, unknown names, or offers you never asked for?
I had no idea what to open, what to ignore, and how to find the one message l actually needed.
But now, there's some good news!
From May 6, 2025, TRAI has introduced a new rule to help all of us make sense of our SMS inbox.
Under this system, every message will come with a single letter to show what type it is. No more guessing!
Here's how it works:
P= Promotional (like sales, offers, or ads)
S= Service-related (reminders, customer updates, etc.)
T= Transactional (important ones like OTPs, bank alerts)
G= Government messages (official info only)
So if you get a message from "ABCXYZ" via Vodafone in Tamil Nadu,
it'll show as VT-ABCXYZ-S - telling you upfront that it's a service
message.
Why does this matter for you and me?
Because with 50+ billion messages sent in India every year, it's getting harder to tell real alerts from spam.
And when money is involved - like bank 0TPs or payment alerts it's risky to open the wrong one or miss the right one.
As someone from the finance world, I think this step brings more clarity, safety, and control to everyday users like us.
It's a small change, but it could make a big difference in protecting
your data, time, and money.
