What you say, when you say it, and how you say it can either build your marriage up or slowly tear it down. Many marriages have fractured not because of infidelity or financial strain, but because of reckless words spoken in anger, or worse, the silence that follows when communication breaks down. In moments of conflict, emotions can cloud judgment. But great grace is needed to pause and truly listen. Steven Covey reminds us: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” In the covenant of marriage, this wisdom is essential. Instead of charging into every disagreement with the goal of being right, imagine what would happen if we first tried to see the issue from our spouse's point of view. It takes humility and maturity to realize that not every argument needs to be won. In fact, some of the most loving things you can do in marriage is to choose peace over being proven right. Letting go of an argument, even when you know you're right, can be a divine act of love.
