You must walk the bridges with the pickpockets, dine with the orphans, and praise the fire for its mercy. Good writing is not imagined, it is collected, like debts and memories, over time. Learn people. Listen to them in their joy, in their despair, in the absurdity of their hopes. The soul of writing lies in the voice of others, borrowed, honoured, and made immortal in your lines. And never, ever, write with the aim of praise. Praise is fleeting. But if your words make a widow weep, or a beggar laugh, or a tyrant wince, then you have done your duty.
