Imagine this: Nurses, the backbone of our healthcare system, are asked to work alongside new AI tools—helping to train systems that handle patient records, schedule treatments, and even suggest medications. At first, it's all framed as "support." The AI will help reduce burnout, streamline tasks, and allow nurses to focus more on patient care. But what happens next? Fast forward a few years, and those same nurses find themselves replaced—not because they failed, but because the AI they helped train is now doing large parts of their jobs faster and cheaper. Hospital executives call it “efficiency.” Nurses call it betrayal. And while AI can't truly replicate compassion, bedside care, or human judgment, it won’t stop companies from trying—especially if it saves them money. Meanwhile, administrative roles and high-level decision-makers remain untouched. The people who touch lives everyday are the ones most at risk of being “automated out.” Brethren and Colleagues!
