The U.S. Department of State has warned its citizens to stay away from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) following chaotic protests on Thursday, June 12. In a travel advisory, the department pointed to reports of tear gas and live ammunition being used during the demonstrations, calling the situation dangerous, especially for American nationals. “Violent protests are currently underway in the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi,” the alert read. “Unverified reports have indicated the use of tear gas and live ammunition.” The Bureau of Consular Affairs urged all U.S. citizens in Kenya to remain extremely cautious and avoid the CBD until calm is restored.
