HARARE โ Lord Collins of Highbury, the United Kingdomโs Minister for Africa, visited President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House this morning in a high-level engagement that signals a renewed chapter in Zimbabwe-UK relations.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation across key areas including mineral value addition, clean energy, industrialisation, ICT and artificial intelligence, and advanced geological technologies. Discussions also included enhancing export-oriented agricultural SMEs and strategies for value addition in the sector.
This visit is being viewed as a significant diplomatic step forward, given the strained relations between the two countries following Zimbabweโs fast-track land reform programme in the early 2000s. Since assuming office in 2017, President Mnangagwa has pursued a policy of Engagement and Re-engagement, aimed at normalising relations with global partners.
โIt has been a real pleasure to meet His Excellency this morning and to be here in Zimbabwe,โ said Lord Collins. โWe are absolutely committed to building a partnership based on equality and respect, with a simple missionโa mission for economic growth that can support both of our peoples.โ
Both sides expressed commitment to forging a modern, mutually beneficial partnership grounded in mutual respect and shared prosperity. They explored opportunities for technology transfer and collaboration in climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable development.
Analysts say the visit carries both symbolic and practical significance. As the UKโs Minister for Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, Lord Collinsโ decision to visit Zimbabweโand to mark King Charles IIIโs 75th birthday while hereโdemonstrates renewed UK interest in engaging Zimbabwe diplomatically and economically.
With the possibility of expanded trade, investment, and collaboration in line with Zimbabweโs Vision 2030, the visit sets the tone for a recalibrated and forward-looking Zimbabwe-UK relationship.
