A 30-year-old man from Kwekwe has been convicted by the Kwekwe Magistrates' Court for impersonating a police officer.
The accused, Kunmbirai Ngoreta, was found guilty of pretending to be a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) under the President's Office. He was sentenced to pay a fine.of USD100 or face 100 days in prison if he fails to pay.
The offence occurred on June 8, 2025, at around 0400 hours. Ngoreta was travelling as a passenger in a Honda Fit vehicle when he refused to pay the fare. He claimed he was a CIO officer and therefore exempt from paying.
Constable Chagoma, who was also in the vehicle, became suspicious of Ngoreta's claim. He instructed the driver to divert to Mbizo Police Station for verification of the alleged identity.
Upon arrival at the police station, investigations.revealed that Ngoreta was not affiliated with any security agency. He was immediately arrested for impersonation.
The court found sufficient evidence to convict
Ngoreta and delivered the sentence as a deterrent.
The case highlights the consequences of falsely
claiming to be a public officer.
