Hernia and Its Types By WeTheDoctors A hernia is a condition where an internal organ or tissue bulges through a weak spot in the muscle or tissue wall that normally contains it. It often appears as a visible lump, especially when standing, coughing, or lifting heavy objects. Some hernias may cause discomfort or pain, while others are painless. Types of Hernia: 1. Inguinal Hernia This is the most common type, particularly in men. It occurs when tissue, usually part of the intestine, pushes through the inguinal canal in the groin area. 2. Femoral Hernia More common in women, this hernia occurs just below the groin. It has a higher risk of complications like strangulation due to the narrow passage through which it protrudes. 3. Umbilical Hernia This type occurs near the belly button (navel). It's common in newborns and often resolves on its own, but can also affect adults, especially after pregnancy or weight gain. 4. Hiatal Hernia Happens when part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. It may lead to symptoms like acid reflux, heartburn, or chest discomfort. 5. Incisional Hernia Develops at the site of a previous surgical incision if the wound doesn't heal properly. It can cause bulging and discomfort at the surgical site. 6. Epigastric Hernia Occurs in the upper abdomen, between the navel and the lower part of the chest. These hernias often contain fat and may cause pain. 7. Spigelian Hernia A rare form of hernia that appears along the outer edge of the rectus abdominis muscle. It's sometimes difficult to detect without imaging.
