Vhembe District Municipality held Disability Education Rights Seminar at Tshikundamalema village on the 22 May 2025. Under Thulamela Local Municipality.
Cllr Machovane Grace, Portfolio Head of Special Programs, urged parents and guardians of children with disabilities not to hide them. She emphasized that SASSA grants should be used for the benefit of the children, not for personal gain. She also encouraged parents to support children who showcase artistic and skill based talents by enrolling them in schools that can nurture their abilities. "It's possible for persons with disabilities to have a great future, they are like everyone else and can do anything," She said.
Chairperson of the Vhembe District Disability Forum, Mr Makhanthisa Thomas, highlighted the forum's campaign for the recognition of persons with disabilities rights, particularly the right to education. He noted that many persons with disabilities lack qualifications and skills due to late disclosure of their disabilities, leading to delayed access to education. "A disabled person without education is lost" He said, In his conclusion he encouraged stakeholders to support education for persons with disabilities.
Ms. Nemanashe Luvhani, Founder of Lwendo Washu Organization, advised parents of children with learning disabilities to seek psychometric assessments to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This would help parents to understand their children's capabilities and provide necessary support.
Mr. Munyai Avhatakali Godfrey, a resident of Tshikundamalema, shared his inspiring story. After losing both legs in 2020, he adapted and started farming using his knees and hands.He encouraged others with disabilities to empower themselves and pursue their passions. "Nothing is impossible for persons with disabilities."He said.
