*Question:* _What is the wisdom behind praying five times a day_ ❓ *Answer:* The wisdom behind this is the expiation of sins to a significant extent because a person, between one prayer and the next, may commit minor sins from forbidden acts, such as looking at marriageable women with lust or telling lies that do not cause harm. A person is tested with various minor sins. By establishing five daily prayers, these sins are expiated for the believers. For example, between Fajr and Dhuhr, if a person commits minor sins, the Dhuhr prayer erases them. Then, between Dhuhr and ^ASr, if minor sins are committed, the ^ASr prayer removes them. Similarly, between Maghrib and ^Ishaa', if minor sins are committed, the ^Ishaa' prayer erases them. Lastly, between ^Ishaa' and Fajr, if minor sins are committed, they are wiped away by the Fajr prayer. This system of prayer provides expiation for the sins of this nation, Ummah. As for lying that does not cause harm, it is considered a minor sin—such as a man telling a lie in jest without harming anyone. However, a lie that causes harm to someone is classified as a major sin.
