Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Tehran of "crossing red lines" by targeting civilian areas in Tel Aviv with missiles, vowing Iran would pay a "very heavy price." The strikes came in response to Israeli air raids on Iranian military and nuclear sites that killed top IRGC commanders, including Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami and Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri.
Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones in retaliation, injuring at least 35 people in Israel and damaging several sites in Tel Aviv. Iranian authorities said the Israeli strikes killed over 80 people, including military leaders and nuclear scientists.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu defended the attacks as preemptive, aimed at halting Iran's nuclear ambitions. Tehran dismissed this, labeling the strikes "blatant aggression" and calling Israel's actions a "declaration of war."
The escalation has derailed upcoming US-Iran nuclear talks. Russia condemned Israel’s actions as illegal and warned of global risks from the attacks on nuclear sites, while the UN was urged to respond.
