Zambia’s late former president, Edgar Lungu, left strict instructions that his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, must not attend his funeral, a family spokesman has said.
The directive is the latest twist in an ongoing dispute over funeral arrangements following Lungu’s death last week in South Africa at the age of 68. The Patriotic Front (PF), Lungu’s political party, and his family are in disagreement with the government over how he should be mourned and buried.
Efforts by the government to repatriate Lungu’s body on Wednesday were unsuccessful due to the standoff with the family and PF officials. Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe and other government representatives flew to South Africa for discussions with Lungu’s widow, Esther, and his daughter Tasila, who are reportedly playing key roles in the funeral decisions.
