*5 WAYS TO CARE FOR YOUR PROSTATE GLAND*
As men age, they become more aware of the prostate.
This is because it doesn’t just grow larger, but poses a problem to their reproductive health.
If you’ve ever wondered what the prostate “fuss” is about, this thread is for you 🫵🏻
*WHAT IS THE PROSTATE?*
The prostate is a small walnut sized gland that’s part of the male reproductive system.
It is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, surrounding part of the urethra (that carries urine and semen out of the body)
*WHAT DOES THE PROSTATE DO?*
The prostate’s main job is to produce a fluid that:
- Nourishes the sperm
- Helps sperm move easily
- Makes up 30% of semen (seminal fluid)
It mixes with sperm from the testicles to create ejaculate.
*HOW DOES IT CHANGE WITH AGE?*
In younger men, the prostate is usually small and functions smoothly.
However, as men get older, the prostate begins to enlarge. This is mostly seen in 40+ men and can lead to various health issues.
*WHAT HEALTH ISSUES?*
Common prostate conditions include:
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate common in men over 50.
- Prostatitis, which is the inflammation or infection of the prostate gland seen in men of all ages.
- Prostate cancer, which is one
of the most common cancers in men.
*WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?*
Common symptoms include:
- Frequent urination (especially at night)
- Weak urine stream
- Trouble starting or stopping urination
- Incomplete emptying of bladder
- Painful urination
- Pain in the pelvis, lower back or groin
- Pain during or after ejaculation
- Blood in urine or semen
- Erectile dysfunction.
These symptoms may point to different prostate conditions and it’s important to get Properly checked out if you experience any.
*WHAT KIND OF TESTS ARE NECESSARY?*
Essential tests include:
- Prostate specific antigen blood test, that measures the level of PSA in the blood.
- Digital rectal examination, which is a physical exam done to checkout the size and shape of the prostate.
- Prostate biopsy, where prostate tissues are taken to check for cancer.
- Prostate ultrasound, to check the size and structure of the prostate.
- Urinalysis or urine culture to check for an infection or blood in urine.
These tests should be done annually from age 40 (if you have a family history) or age 45, if you don’t.
*5 WAYS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROSTATE*
1. Eat prostate friendly foods
- Tomatoes
- Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower
- Fatty fish
- Pumpkin seeds
- Green tea
2. Exercise regularly: At least 30 minutes 5 days a week.
3. Stay hydrated, but wisely: Drink a lot of water but avoid overloading in the evenings.
4. Get screened regularly Start screening at 40 (if you have a family history or you’re of black descent) or 45, if you’re not.
Early detection = better outcomes.
5. Avoid overuse of medications
- Long term use of antihistamines and decongestants
- Long term use of herbal supplements
In addition:
- Practice safe sex
- Urinate immediately after intercourse
- Treat infections on time
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Reduce stress and sleep well
- Limit exposure to toxins like pesticides and chemicals.
Taking care of your prostate is pretty straight forward.
- Are you of African descent or have a family history of prostate issues? - Start screening at 40 years old.
If not, start at 45.
- Do you eat a lot of processed foods and red meat? - Reduce intake and increase intake of antioxidants like tomatoes.
- Do you lead a sedentary lifestyle? - Start exercising, even walking helps.
- Do you have problems urinating? - See a doctor immediately.
Your prostate is important, and would cause complications if it’s ignored.
Don’t wait for symptoms to act.
- Clean up your lifestyle
- Get informed
- Get checked out.
Smart men put their health first.
