GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a chronic digestive disorder where acid from the stomach flows back into the oesophagus. Over time, this backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the lining of the oesophagus.
What causes GERD?
GERD is often caused by a weakened lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), allowing stomach acid to escape upward. Triggers can include:
* Being overweight or obese
* Smoking
* Eating large meals or lying down after eating
* Drinking caffeine, alcohol, or carbonated drinks
* Certain medications, such as aspirin
How can I spot the signs?
GERD may feel like a simple discomfort at first, but persistent symptoms can affect quality of life. Common signs include:
* Heartburn, especially after meals or at night
* Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
* Difficulty swallowing
* Chest or upper belly pain
* Nausea
* Recurring sour or bitter taste in the mouth
When should I see a doctor?
You should see a doctor if you think you have GERD or if your symptoms don’t improve with lifestyle changes or over-the-counter treatments. Early medical attention can help identify the physical cause and prevent more serious complications, like inflammation or damage to the oesophagus.
Don’t ignore persistent symptoms — your gut health matters.
