President Paul Biya, or whoever is governing and posting on social media on his behalf, has dismissed street protests and social media activism as illegitimate routes to political power. His comments come amid escalating tensions after Maurice Kamto’s heavily suppressed rally in Douala, where thousands of supporters were blocked by police, and Kamto himself was placed under house arrest. Biya insists that political office is only won through the ballot box.
