The tragic event took place in June 2023 after a search operation was launched when top crew lost communication of the sub which contained five people – the pilot, a content expert and three paying clients.
The submersible that had an inside space of 22ft long and 9ft wide, went missing around 435 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada while on an exploratory mission to visit the remains of the Titanic.
Now, approaching the two year anniversary of the heartbreaking implosion, footage of the ship has been shared with the BBC for a documentary called Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster.
On 18 June 2023, the surface crew lost contact with the sub while they travelled 12,500ft deep to explore the shipwreck.
On 22 June, the Coast Guard announced that a ‘catastrophic implosion’ had occurred after some debris was found near the Titanic wreck.
Sadly, all five passengers were killed, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French diver/Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet and father and son, Shahzada and Suleman Dawood.
Footage has now been shared of the harrowing moment when Wendy Rush, wife of Stockton Rush, heard a noise that sounded like a ‘door slamming’ while the sub was at around 3,300m.
She then asks an OceanGate crew member “What was that bang?”
After, they received a text message from the sub claiming it had dropped ‘two weights’ – and she mistakenly thought everything was fine.
Sadly, the USCG said that the noise was the sound of the Titan imploding and that the text message must have been sent right before the catastrophic incident.
