HPVL week 1 ends with thriller
It was not the best of sportsmanship behavior but certainly the game is played on the court and not on social media. The weekend was filled with soo many eventful circumstances but week one done and dusted for the HPVL.
Black Rhinos ladies made their debut against fellow debutants Raven Claw and the latter got a fairly good run as they beat the former 3-0. Chapungu lost to UZ Wolves 3-0 before the match of the day champions Hre City squared off against title contenders Black Mambas. A cagey affair needed a bold player and both sets of players were ready but the police side came top in the decider as it finished 3-2 in their favour.
In the men's side, Black Rhinos made a great start to the season grabbing 6 points from two games on Saturday. Firstly, defeating fellow uniformed team Chapungu and defeating the champions NABA by 3-0 scorelines. Buse narrowly lost to Old Hararians 2-3 while Black Mambas beat the returning team Correctional Spikers. Ruwa shook off their lost from UZ Wolves with a win against Old Hararians. UZ Wolves and Ruwa had to be a big game for Saturday fixtures with the second set being the highlight with a 34-32 set win for Ruwa but it drained them as they lost 3-1.
Sunday fixtures resumed at 1pm with the uniformed teams of Black Rhinos and Chapungu opening the proceedings in the ladies category. Lillian and company made light weight as they dispatched Chapungu 3-0 and Ruwa found it tough against Raven Claw by losing 3-0 thus having Raven Claw sit at the top of the log after the first round of matches. Black Rhinos and UZ Wolves share second spot with 3 points each but UZ Wolves edge them with a better set caution but played a game less. Black Mambas with 2 points with Hre City with 1 point. Buse are yet to play but already climb the log sharing the position with Ruwa and Chapungu who anchor the ladies log table.
Black Rhinos are second spot with 6 points having played on Saturday. UZ Wolves are third with 5 points after beating Black Mambas in a match marred with unsportsmanlike behaviors and might not be surprising to see both teams facing disciplinary action. With all that controversial matters, Black Mambas could only take a point but puts them top on the log with 7 points from 3 games. Buse are fourth with 4 points. Sir Gringo's Ruwa have 3points from 2 games sharing the position with the defending champions Naba who are sixth with 3 points having beaten Buse on Sunday. New coach Mdu was happy to see the good result and stated it is work in progress for the champions. Old Hararians are seventh with 2 points from the weekend fixtures while Correctional Spikers and Chapungu are joint bottom with no points on the board.
Action will resume in June but the ZPVL will take center stage monthend and another blockbuster fixtures are lined up.
