The agreement, formalized on June 17, 2025, establishes a five-year strategic partnership aimed at strengthening regulatory frameworks through cooperation in areas such as falsified medicine detection, implementation of track and trace systems, development of nanotechnology and biotechnology, vaccine and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production, and joint regulatory innovations.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, MCAZ Director General Richard T. Rukwata described the agreement as a “significant milestone in regional regulatory convergence.”
“By working together, ZAMRA and MCAZ will leverage each other’s expertise and resources to strengthen the fight against substandard and falsified medical products, and promote public health and safety in both nations,” Rukwata said.
The MoU establishes a framework for joint participation in international forums, information sharing, capacity building, mutual recognition of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections, and strategies to attract pharmaceutical investments into both countries.
ZAMRA Director General Makomani Siyanga said the partnership is a proactive step toward enhancing regulatory efficiency and innovation.
“This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to ensuring that only safe, effective, and quality-assured medical products are accessible in our respective markets,” Siyanga said.
Both regulatory bodies emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improving public access to quality-assured medicines.
The agreement will remain in force for five years, with provisions for renewal upon mutual agreement.
