In an interview with Zimpapers, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, said the President’s participation underscores Zimbabwe’s dedication to modernising and preserving national archival systems. “His Excellency President Mnangagwa is set to officially open this ESARBICA conference here today. His presence will signify the Government’s commitment to preserving and modernising our national archives,” said Ambassador Faranisi. According to organisers, the opening ceremony will begin at 9:50am with a ministerial briefing before President Mnangagwa delivers the keynote address and formally opens the event. Hosted by the National Archives of Zimbabwe in collaboration with the International Council on Archives (ICA), the conference kicked off on Monday with a strong focus on emerging archival trends, including digital transformation, climate resilience, and inclusivity in information access. Over 50 academic and professional presentations are scheduled across the four-day conference, covering disruptive technologies, artificial intelligence in records management, cloud-based preservation, and the repatriation of historical archives. The conference opened with a pre-conference workshop led by University of Botswana lecturer Dr Thatayaone Segaetsho, aimed at training junior archivists from 16 countries in disaster and risk management, particularly in response to climate change. On Tuesday, attention shifted to digital integration in archival processes. Botswana-based EDRMS consultant Dr Segomotso Keakopa led discussions on automation and digitisation, setting the tone for technology-driven archival practices. National Archives of Zimbabwe Director Ms Brenda Mamvura revealed that the country is piloting a US\$3 million Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS), with 60 percent of the procurement process already complete. “We have identified a company to implement the EDRMS, which will be piloted in three ministries — Finance, Public Service, and the Office of the President and Cabinet,” said Ms Mamvura. “We expect the system to be fully operational by December 2025, significantly enhancing efficiency and service delivery.” She added that Zimbabwe’s active engagement in ESARBICA and ICA forums ensures the country remains aligned with global standards and technological best practices. “As part of ESARBICA, we are building partnerships and exploring opportunities in artificial intelligence and data migration. This conference is vital for benchmarking and learning,” she said. As proceedings continue, delegates will participate in the ESARBICA business meeting on Friday, where key resolutions will be adopted and a new executive board elected. The event will conclude with a cultural excursion, giving attendees a chance to explore the majestic Victoria Falls. President Mnangagwa’s address is expected to energise the region’s archival community, reaffirming Zimbabwe’s commitment to safeguarding its heritage while embracing innovation.
