*CCTV cameras, digital OBs: Murkomen outlines new reforms for police stations*
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a series of reforms in the National Police Service (NPS) aimed at enhancing efficiency and professionalism in police stations across Kenya. Key reforms include:
• *Mandatory CCTV installation* in all 1,209 police stations within two years, monitored by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
• *Criminalisation of CCTV tampering,* with OCSs required to report camera failures within an hour.
• *Digitization of occurrence books* within a year to prevent tampering of police reports.
• *Community policing initiatives* to foster better relations between police and the public.
• *Regular audits and performance reviews* to assess police conduct independently.
• *Collaboration with the Law Society and religious leaders* in implementing reforms.
• *Mandatory annual professional training* for all police officers to restore discipline and professionalism.
• *Reform centralization* under the leadership of the OCS at each station.
These reforms come amid scrutiny following *the death of Albert Ojwang’ in police custody,* where missing CCTV footage and conflicting police accounts have raised public concern. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the incident, which highlights the urgent need for the reforms.
