*Complications of Frequent or Untreated Heartburn (Chronic Acid Reflux / GERD):*
1. *Esophagitis* – Inflammation of the esophagus lining due to repeated acid exposure.
2. *Esophageal Strictures* – Narrowing of the esophagus from scar tissue → leads to difficulty swallowing.
3. *Barrett’s Esophagus* – Pre-cancerous change in esophageal lining cells → increases risk of esophageal cancer.
4. *Esophageal Ulcers* – Open sores in the esophagus → can bleed, cause pain, or lead to anemia.
5. *Chronic Cough / Hoarseness* – From acid irritating the throat and vocal cords.
6. *Asthma Worsening* – Acid reflux can trigger or aggravate asthma symptoms.
7. *Tooth Erosion* – Acid can wear away tooth enamel if it reaches the mouth.
