On June 6, 2025, Anchal Bhateja, a lawyer from Delhi, became the first blind woman advocate to argue a case before the Supreme Court of India.
Born prematurely, she lost her vision due to Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). She studied law using screen readers, audiobooks, and Braille. Her appearance marks a milestone for disability representation in India’s legal profession.
Despite over 1.3 million advocates in India, very few are persons with disabilities, and even fewer reach the Supreme Court. Bhateja also works to improve accessibility in courts and mentors other blind law students.
