June 1999. Dras sector. 13 JAK RIF was setting up its logistics base under 56 Mountain Brigade when the enemy unleashed a savage artillery barrage without warning. Smoke filled the air. Shrapnel ripped through tents and men alike. Six Ghatak soldiers were down—wounded, bleeding, and exposed. Chaos reigned. Someone had to act. Someone had to bring them back alive. That someone was Major Ajay Singh Jasrotia. The KargilWar had just begun, and despite being on medical restrictions after an ankle surgery, he had volunteered to rejoin his unit at the front. Nicknamed “Rambo” by his peers for his sheer physical courage, he lived up to it—and far beyond. Major Jasrotia didn’t hesitate. As shells rained down, he stepped up—rallying his men, steadying the panic, and charging into the fire. One by one, he carried the wounded on his back—through blood, smoke, and deafening blasts. Just as he pulled the 6th soldier to safety, a shell exploded near him. He was grievously wounded. But he refused evacuation.
