Nal'ibali, in collaboration with Dimbaza Library, recently dazzled children from Dimbaza township with fantastic World Play Day activities. The programme, which aimed to promote reading for fun, early literacy, and creative learning through play, attracted 35 children from three local primary schools and three Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, Nal'ibali literacy volunteers, library staff, and community members.
Nal'ibali led interactive storytelling sessions in isiXhosa, which included sing-alongs, group games, and Scrabble for older students to improve vocabulary and spelling. There was also the game Twist, which fosters physical activity and balance, as well as Snakes and Ladders, which improves counting and turn-taking skills.
Children eagerly participated in stories and games, while teachers welcomed the opportunity to engage students in non-classroom reading experiences. ECD practitioners gained new storytelling skills and confidence through a short Nal’ibali literacy workshop on how to add play to children's literacy.
The joy of children engaging in play-based learning activities showed the true power of collaboration to create great experiences for children. Let us continue to work together to spread the love of reading in South Africa.
