It's always wonderful to witness young Nalibalians like Cassidy Hendricks, a Grade 4 pupil at Ferndale Primary School in Cape Town and a proud member of the Nal'ibali Southfield Library, reach significant milestones. Cassidy will represent the Western Cape in the Grade 4 Engish First Language category at the SA Literacy Association's Annual Reading Competition on 21 June 2025, for the third year in a row. Her remarkable achievements also include winning the English First Language Grade 2 category SA Literacy Association's Annual Reading Competition in 2023.
According to her grandmother, Brenda Tommy, reading aloud has been instrumental in enhancing Cassidy's pronunciation and spelling abilities. "We use stories from Nal'ibali supplements, especially WRAD stories, which she reads to audiences ranging from pre-schoolers at libraries to seniors at Homes for the Aged. They are always loved by everyone and have helped her gain confidence," she said.
By sharing stories with diverse audiences, Cassidy has gained confidence and demonstrated that reading can thrive beyond the classroom walls. Her success story underscores the importance of creating a print-rich environment, supported by reading clubs, parents, and libraries, to empower children to reach their full reading potential.
