Questions continue to swirl over how Chivayo-linked car dealers repeatedly win government vehicle supply contracts. Their close association with Chivayo—who enjoys strong ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa—has heightened public suspicion over how state tenders are awarded, often without transparency. On Tuesday, President Mnangagwa presided over a handover ceremony at State House, where vehicles, grain carriers, and solar kits were given to Agriculture Extension Officers, commonly known as Madhubani. The supplier of these vehicles? FaraMatsi Motors—again bringing the controversial dealer’s name to the forefront. The government has not disclosed the cost of these vehicles or the procurement process used, triggering fears of yet another scandal reminiscent of Chivayo’s previous state contracts—where millions were disbursed without due diligence or delivery. Mnangagwa’s administration has long been accused of awarding tenders without public bidding, often funneled through his twin sons, Sean and Collins Mnangagwa. The two have previously been implicated in questionable business dealings involving opaque state contracts and preferential access to lucrative government tenders. Central to these dealings is Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga, reportedly the key facilitator of such contracts. Sources allege Guvamatanga authorizes payments for dubious deals using public funds, allegedly receiving kickbacks in return. A former managing director at Barclays Zimbabwe, Guvamatanga is said to have accumulated vast unexplained wealth—including multimillion-dollar properties in South Africa, held under proxies. Despite mounting calls for lifestyle audits and investigations, no action has been taken by Zimbabwe’s state institutions. FaraMatsi Motors owner Farai Matsika could not be reached for comment by the time of publication, though efforts to get his response are ongoing. Matsika, a self-made multimillionaire, is also the owner of Doves Funeral Holdings and has global business interests. He co-founded Croco Motors and served as its CEO before selling his stake to establish FaraMatsi Motors. While Matsika is widely regarded as focused and determined, his association with Chivayo—particularly at a time of alleged state looting—has put his business dealings under public scrutiny. *_-ZimEye_* 2. *NBSZ LAUNCHES STAUNCH DEFENCE OF BLOOD PRICES AFTER OUTCRY* The National Blood Services of Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has launched a strident defence against public criticism over the high cost of blood. Ahead of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, Zimbabweans on social media have been debating the cost of a pint of blood which at some private institutions can go up to US$1,000. NBSZ says it makes just US$5 in profit for every pint of blood sold, whose current price is capped at US$250. The country’s blood bank insists that it provides public hospitals with blood for free as the government picks up the tab. “We operate on a cost recovery basis, meaning that we recover exactly what it costs us to collect, process and distribute the blood. That entire chain is made up of activities whose cumulative cost is currently US$245, thus we charge US$250 to cater for normal process losses,” NBSZ said in response to questions from ZimLive. Social activist Freeman Chari argues that a pint of blood should not cost more than $100. He wrote on X: “As a person with a bit of knowledge on how blood banks work, the most expensive thing is the pack, which averages about $40-$50 if bought in bulk. “The screening and separation process doesn’t cost more than $20. If you add labour, collection and storage costs of $20 per pint maximum cost would be $90. “The total cost of processing blood if done efficiently is below $100. In fact Lucy Marowa, the current CEO of NBSZ said in 2019 it was $120. Why would they add a 100 percent markup for a national service? Zimbabwe needs only 100,000 units per year. Which is just $10 million. A government for the people can subsidise that. That’s what governments do.” Vicky Maponga, a spokesperson for NBSZ, maintains that they only make a small profit from blood sales to keep the service running. She explained: “While blood is generously donated by individuals, it’s important to note that once blood is donated it does not go directly and immediately for transfusion. Ensuring its safety and availability for transfusion requires significant resources. “When we receive blood from donors we can only quantify it after all the necessary tests to make it safe for transfusion. Blood undergoes rigorous testing, component separation, storage and then distribution. All these processes are supposed to adhere to international standards. “The value chain involved in getting it from vein to vein is what costs money. Since 2018, the government committed to providing free blood to all patients in public hospitals, so blood products are free in all public health institutions because the government meets the full cost by paying NBSZ directly for each unit utilised. “For private patients, the cost remains the same ($250), but the cost is borne by the individual.” NBSZ CEO Lucy Marowa said they were collecting record levels of blood donations. She said NBSZ is expecting to collect 97,500 units of blood this year owing to increased awareness and successful campaigns. “Just to give you a snippet of how successful the blood donation programme has been, this year we are targeting to collect 97,500 units of blood. So far, just for the first half of this year, we have actually achieved about 73 percent of the target, so we are well on track,” she told a news conference in Harare on Monday. Last year, NBSZ collected 82 percent of the targeted volume of blood. “The 2025 target is actually a scale up from last year’s target where we wanted to collect 88,450 units. From that target of last year, we managed to collect 82 percent, which was 77,020 units,” Marowa said. The World Blood Donor Day commemorations slated for Kadoma are an opportunity to increase awareness on blood donations, she said. “We are hoping that this will inspire both the school-going donors and the adults from that community to become regular blood donors. We are still calling upon Zimbabweans to come in and continue to give blood because it comes in and it goes out on a daily basis,” she added. *_-ZimLive_* 3. *MULTIPLE SOURCES REPORT WALTER MZEMBI HAS JETTED INTO ZIMBABWE* The exiled former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has jetted into Harare, multiple sources have reported. “We saw Mzembi being whisked out of Bronte Hotel this morning heading to a meeting with the president,” a source told ZimEye. Another source stated the famed G40 character was at the time of writing held up in a meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at his private home and would head to another one later in the day. “He is meeting his excellency right now and has been given a large crowd of security teams around him in what could be an appointment,” another source told ZimEye. Mzembi was contacted and did not respond to requests for comment. Two of his colleagues sounded shocked when asked for their reaction over the development. Presidential Spikesman George Charamba was reached for comment. The last time Mzembi was in Zimbabwe he bolted out of the country complaining of persecution following the military coup that removed the late President Robert Mugabe. He was Foreign Affairs Minister at the time. This is a developing story... *_-ZimEye_* 4. *SUSAN MUTAMI WANTS ANOTHER CHILD FATHERED BY EX-LOVER TEMBA MLISWA* Susan Mutami has reached out to her ex lover and former Norton Independent legislator Temba Mliswa to have another child with her again. Posting on her X handle, Mutami said her son fathered by Mliswa is demanding a baby sister, hence she had to reach out to her ex lover. She begged Mliswa to bury the hatchet with her for the sake of their son Tino. “Dear Temba Mliswa, your son has asked me countless times if he can have a baby sister and the young man is sad because his best friend at daycare has a baby sister at home but he doesn’t. “I told him he has a lot of sister’s in Zimbabwe but he’s insisting he wants a baby sister. “In my house whatever Tino wants Tino gets, now I don’t know what to do Baba Tino. “I’ve unblocked you so that you can talk to the boys and I would also appreciate we have a mediator someone like Saviour Kasukuwere who I respect so much, munhu mukuru wandinonyara titaurirane hopefully he might assist us in ironing out our differences for Tino’s sake. “The boy misses you so much. He’s always locating you on the World Map. His older brother has been teaching him how to read the Map so they never forget how to get back home,” she said. *_-ZwNews_* 5. *NPA DROPS CHARGES AGAINST MPOFU AND CHIMOMBE OVER US$9 MILLION STREETLIGHTS TENDER* The National Prosecuting Authority on Wednesday withdrew corruption charges against business partners Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, who were accused of defrauding the City of Harare in a US$9 million tender to supply and install streetlights. The matter was withdrawn before plea when the duo appeared before Justice Benjamin Chikowero of the Harare High Court for the commencement of their trial. Whisper Mabhaudhi, for the National Prosecuting Authority, did not give reasons for the withdrawal. Mpofu and Chimombe remain on trial in a separate matter in which they are accused of defrauding the ministry of agriculture in a scheme to supply goats. “The withdrawal of the charges by the state is a welcome development,” Mpofu’s lawyer Tapson Dzvetero said outside court. “Our clients are on the record regarding the weakness of the state case and that the charges they are facing are trumped up, baseless and unfounded. “They have no case to answer. It is only unfortunate that such withdrawal happens after all this long and after the long pre-trial incarceration for so long.” Chimombe’s lawyer Ashiel Mugiya added: “We had prepared and submitted our defence outlines. I’m certain the state just realised that its case against our clients was too weak.” Last year Chimombe took the state to task challenging the NPA to prove how he is linked to the streetlights tender. His challenge was however thrown out by magistrate Dennis Mangosi. Mpofu was the main suspect in the alleged crime. The two were arrested by officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) at a time they were already languishing in remand prison following their arrest over the $7 million goat supply tender. Chimombe argued that he was neither an employee nor director of Juluka Enndo Joint Venture, the company at the centre of the deal. The prosecution was alleging that the business partners criminally misrepresented facts when they submitted their list of previous works for consideration for the tender. *_-ZimLive_* 6. *MUSHORIWA DEFIES TSHABANGU, PUBLICLY DECLARES HIS USE OF CDF* Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Member of Parliament for Dzivaresekwa, Edwin Mushoriwa, released a detailed report outlining how he utilised the 2024 Constituency Development Fund (CDF), reinforcing his commitment to transparency and people-driven governance. Since the end of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in 2013, the fund has been disbursed in Zimbabwean dollars at the prevailing official bank rate. Mushoriwa a Nelson Chamisa loyalist, has remained steadfast and refused to align with the controversial Sengezo Tshabangu faction, and focuses on accountability and grassroots development... *_-ZimEye_* 7. *GWANDA RESIDENTS FACE WATER DISCONNECTIONS OVER DEBT* The Gwanda Municipality has intensified water disconnections in the mining town in a bid to recover unpaid debt. In a notice the local authority urged those owing to settle their debts. Failure to do so will see council take legal action. The water disconnection exercise is targeting both residential and commercial debtors. “The municipality is facing extreme pressure from suppliers of materials and inputs in the provision of water and management of sewer services. In particular, the electricity bills of these plants have increased to unmanageable levels owing to the continued default by debtors. Electricity disconnection notices have been served on council in this regard by the service provider. “In light of this, the municipality wishes to advise that it has no other choice but to up-scale its disconnection exercise as well to recover all money due to it without any further delays. The municipality, therefore, urges all debtors to quickly settle their bills to avoid the inconvenience of water disconnection. In addition, the municipality is progressing to the next stage of legal action which shall lead to the attachment and auctioning of property owned by debtors in default,” reads the notice. *_-Herald_* 8. *THOMAS MAPFUMO RETIRES FROM STAGE PERFORMANCE* After decades of action in the entertainment industry and touring the globe, United States-based Zimbabwean musician Thomas Mapfumo is bidding farewell to his followers with a final performance.
