A recently released report by the IPPR and Namibia Fact Check stated that the 2024 Namibian presidential and parliamentary elections were significantly marked by widespread mis- and disinformation, much of it amplified through social media. The report highlights how political parties and their supporters engaged in smear campaigns, narrative laundering, and the spread of fake news across platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X, and TikTok using AI tools like cheap fakes. The report also states that electoral bodies and media were unprepared for this wave of manipulation.
