During the rice harvesting festival at the Ogongo Campus, Professor Kenneth Matengu, Vice Chancellor of UNAM, emphasised the significance of rice production in addressing food security in the country.
He mentioned that UNAM has trained approximately 4,000 farmers so far, with about 1,000 of them now engaged in rice farming, specifically with Lalimbezi rice.
Matengu acknowledged that many farmers face challenges, particularly with water availability, as rice requires water to grow.
He also noted that this year alone, they have trained 20 farmers. “The initiative continues to focus on training more farmers and researching to find more methods for rice cultivation to enhance food security”, he said.
