India’s goods exports in value terms in Apr’25 (+9.2% YoY) grew the highest in the last
six months after a flat Mar’25, while imports (ex-oil and gold) were also up 17.2% YoY. For
FY25, exports in value terms were flat, whereas imports were up 4.3% YoY
Drewry index for container seaborne freight at USD 3,527 per 40 ft container was
down 9.7% YoY. The rate shot up 69% in the last one month, possibly on anticipated
disruption to trade from heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
May’25 major port cargo volume at 75.2 MMT was up 4.4% YoY/ 4.4% MoM and
container volume at 17.3 MMT was up 11.7% YoY.Iron ore and thermal coal dragged down
cargo volume growth at major ports in May’25
Non-major ports handled 58.75 MMT in Apr’25 (+4.3% YoY). EXIM volume was up 4%
YoY at 47.3 MMT, while coastal shipping volume was at 11.5 MMT (+5.4% YoY). The
growth was driven by POL and crude products at 15 MMT, up 39% YoY, while both
containers (11.9 MMT, -5.6% YoY) and coal (16.7 MMT, -7.9% YoY) registered a dip.
