Digital Initiatives in Higher Education in India
Source - PROFESSOR ADDA NOTES BOOKLET
▪️ The Government of India has undertaken multiple digital initiatives aimed at transforming the higher education landscape. These initiatives focus on improving accessibility, affordability, and quality of education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
▪️ SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) was launched in 2017 to offer free online courses across disciplines, from school to postgraduate level. Over 3 crore learners have benefited from more than 2000 online courses designed by top academic institutions including IITs and central universities.
▪️ SWAYAM PRABHA is a group of 40 DTH channels dedicated to broadcasting high-quality educational content 24x7. Subjects include science, arts, commerce, engineering, law, and vocational training. It ensures access to education even in areas with limited internet connectivity.
▪️ e-PG Pathshala, developed by the University Grants Commission and INFLIBNET, offers structured e-content in over 70 postgraduate subjects. It includes video lectures, reading materials, self-assessment tests, and glossaries, supporting self-paced learning.
▪️ National Digital Library of India (NDLI), hosted by IIT Kharagpur, provides access to over 7 crore digital resources, including books, journal articles, audio, video, theses, and other learning materials. The platform supports multiple Indian languages, promoting inclusive education.
▪️ DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) serves as a platform for teachers to access, create, and share educational content. It supports teacher training and curriculum-aligned materials, enhancing classroom delivery.
▪️ Virtual Labs, an initiative led by IITs, offers over 100 online experiments in various science and engineering disciplines. It helps students in remote areas perform lab work without physical infrastructure.
▪️ National Academic Depository (NAD) enables secure, online access to academic certificates and degrees. It reduces the risk of document forgery and simplifies the verification process for employers and institutions.
▪️ As per the AISHE Report 2022, more than 70% of higher education institutions in India have adopted at least one form of digital learning tool, reflecting a major transition towards hybrid and technology-enabled education.
🔹 These initiatives align with the broader goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes technology integration, multilingual education, and equitable access to learning opportunities for all sections of society.
