The catastrophic collapse of underground support pillars at the Clydesdale Colliery in Coalbrook, near Sasolburg in the Free State province of South Africa, spanned an estimated 3,000 hectares, with approximately 900 pillars giving way. The miners, trapped 180 meters beneath the surface, never made it out alive. Due to the immense scale of the collapse and the unstable conditions underground, their bodies were never recovered.
