On this day, 437 miners lost their lives in what remains ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ต๐ถ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐. The catastrophic collapse of underground support pillars at the Clydesdale Colliery in Coalbrook, near Sasolburg in the Free State province of South Africa, spanned an estimated 3,000 hectares, with approximately 900 pillars giving way. The miners, trapped 180 meters beneath the surface, never made it out alive. Due to the immense scale of the collapse and the unstable conditions underground, their bodies were never recovered.
