Rains in the month of May in Mumbai - Kailash Anerao In 52 years of staying in Mumbai, I have never witnessed so much rains in the month of May. What does this indicate? Should we be concerned about this unusual phenomenon?? Scientists have been warming the general public about global warming & climate breakdown for decades now. We had no shortage of warnings and we ignored them all. 1. Limits to Growth -1972 2. Overshoot -1982 3. Carl Sagan testifying before US Congress -1985 4. Rio Earth Summit - 1992 5. Global scientists (including all living Nobel Peace Prize winners) issuing warnings to humanity that human impact puts the future of the living world at serious risk - 1992 6. Exactly 25 years later, “World Scientists” issued Second and Final Warning to Humanity signed by more than 15,000 scientists - 2017 7. Earth's poles undergo simultaneous freakish extreme heat with parts of Antarctica more than 40C warmer than average and areas of the Arctic more than 30C warmer than average - 2022 8. Since 2015, every year has been one of the warmest ever recorded with Year 2024 being declared the warmest year in recorded history. Yet, world community leaders have done almost nothing to course-correct and continued on the path of destruction of life and life support systems of the planet. A hotter planet is a wetter planet. More water-vapour (potent greenhouse gas) in the air in turn causes more warming and this is only one of the more than 40 amplifying climate feedback loops which have been discovered. An amplifying, or positive, feedback on global warming is a process whereby an initial change that causes warming brings about another change that results in even more warming. Becoz of these positive feedback loops, more energy is getting absorbed in the climate systems then ever before. This energy imbalances are causing all types of unusual weather events in every corner of the world which are increasing in frequency and intensity. As some common folks must have realised till now that both local weather & global climate has been disrupted and no season is following the past trends or timelines. So, welcome to this new world where “abnormal” has become the new normal. In 15-20 years time, our planet is poised to become unrecognisable and a living hell on Earth. What can we do? We all need to behave like we have been put into a planetary hospice. Dave Pollard says: “No one is in control. The enemy, if there is one, is not only a cabal of elites, but a set of co-dependent collapsing systems that every one of us has a vested interest in trying… to perpetuate — systems we have all helped co-create and are almost all dependent on… The question we must each ask ourselves, I think, is this: If we acknowledge that our systems and hence our civilization cannot be reformed or ‘saved’, what can we do now that will make a difference in our communities and for those we love?” We must live life as if every act, every task, and every kindness expressed to one’s self and others might be the last. Live and act with gratitude, generosity, compassion, service and an open heart that is willing to be broken over and over again.
