Brewing Catastrophe THE Middle East may be hurtling towards (تیزی سے بڑھ رہا ہے) a catastrophic war (تباہ کن جنگ) not seen in decades, sparked by Israel’s unprovoked attack (بلا اشتعال حملہ) against Iran last week. While the Israelis struck with great ferocity (شدید شدت سے حملہ کیا) initially, Iran has fought back, causing major damage to Israeli cities. Yet despite the intense exchange of fire (فائرنگ کا شدید تبادلہ) across hundreds of kilometres, neither side is ready to back down (پیچھے ہٹنا), and no off-ramps (بچنے کا راستہ) are visible for de-escalation. In fact, the threat of regional war has grown (علاقائی جنگ کا خطرہ بڑھ گیا ہے) with signs that the US may get involved in attacking more Iranian nuclear facilities at Tel Aviv’s behest (تل ابیب کے کہنے پر). More American military hardware (فوجی ساز و سامان) has been moved to the region while President Donald Trump has said he may or may not get involved militarily. He has demanded "unconditional surrender" (غیر مشروط ہتھیار ڈالنا) from Iran, suggesting that the Iranian supreme leader could be targeted (اشارہ دیتے ہوئے کہ ایرانی سپریم لیڈر کو نشانہ بنایا جا سکتا ہے). In response, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Iran will reject “an imposed war” and “an imposed peace” (ایک مسلط شدہ جنگ اور ایک مسلط شدہ امن کو رد کرے گی), and that his nation “will not surrender”. This crisis is entirely of Israel’s own making (مکمل طور پر اسرائیل کا اپنا پیدا کردہ ہے). Iran and the US were making satisfactory progress on the nuclear issue (جوہری مسئلے پر اطمینان بخش پیش رفت) when Tel Aviv threw a spanner in the works (کام میں رکاوٹ ڈالی). In a sanctimonious statement (بظاہر نیک، لیکن منافقانہ بیان) after the recent G7 summit in Canada, the grouping termed Iran as “the principal source of regional instability and terror” (ایران کو علاقائی عدم استحکام اور دہشت گردی کا بنیادی ذریعہ قرار دیا), while mouthing the tired shibboleth about Israel’s ‘self-defence’ (اسرائیل کے 'حق خود ارادیت' کے بارے میں گھسی پٹی بات کرنا). This is doublespeak at its finest (بہترین منافقانہ زبان). While Iran indeed has issues with many of its Arab neighbours (اپنے کئی عرب پڑوسیوں کے ساتھ مسائل), when it comes to state-backed terror, occupation of territory and the mass murder of civilians, Israel is in a class of its own (ریاستی حمایت یافتہ دہشت گردی، علاقے پر قبضہ اور شہریوں کے بڑے پیمانے پر قتل کے معاملے میں، اسرائیل کا اپنا ایک الگ درجہ ہے). The only way to stop the march towards an expanded war is for Tel Aviv to be muzzled immediately (فوری طور پر خاموش کرایا جائے). If Mr Trump makes the mistake of plunging into the fight on Israel’s behalf (اسرائیل کی طرف سے لڑائی میں کودنا), the world will enter very dangerous territory. Iran may be no match for the US-Israel combine militarily (فوجی طور پر امریکہ-اسرائیل کے اتحاد کا مقابلہ نہیں کر سکتی), but it will defend itself vigorously (زور و شور سے اپنا دفاع کرے گی) in the face of an existential threat (وجود کا خطرہ). Instead of launching another imperial regime change/nation-building crusade (ایک اور سامراجی حکومت کی تبدیلی/قوم کی تعمیر کی مہم شروع کرنا), the US and its European allies must prevail on Israel (امریکہ اور اس کے یورپی اتحادیوں کو اسرائیل پر دباؤ ڈالنا چاہیے) to end the war now. Washington must not join Tel Aviv’s war party (واشنگٹن کو تل ابیب کی جنگی جماعت میں شامل نہیں ہونا چاہیے), while the global community must censure Israel (عالمی برادری کو اسرائیل کی مذمت کرنی چاہیے) for sowing chaos in the region (علاقے میں افراتفری پھیلانا), while unleashing genocidal violence in the occupied territories (مقبوضہ علاقوں میں نسل کشی کی وحشت کو جاری کرنا).
