The Learning Curve

Today, while I was on my way to the laboratory to run tests on my samples for my research work, I was waiting for the traffic light to turn green so I could proceed. Suddenly, an incident unfolded before my eyes.
A young lady on a motorbike drank something from a white plastic cup—one of the many local drinks common in the northern region—and then carelessly threw the cup into the middle of the road. Before the cup even touched the ground, I heard a voice behind me shouting at her to pick it up. The man expressed his frustration, saying things like, "Why are we like this?" "We are so dirty." "Can't we keep Ghana clean?" He was in his late 40s and riding a motorking, clearly upset by the lady's actions.
I felt a wave of happiness seeing someone who cares about keeping our country clean. Often, we wish Ghana were as clean as some of the countries in the Western world that we dream of visiting, yet we fail to take the necessary steps to achieve that cleanliness. Ironically, we, the same individuals who don’t take care of our environment here, wouldn’t dare to litter or misbehave in those Western countries. But here, we vandalize our surroundings without a second thought.
What is the root of this problem?
