There's a straightforward reason why many Zimbabweans have life assurance but not medical aid: it's all about price. You can get life assurance and a funeral policy for just US$1 per month! For example, Old Mutual's policies start at only US$2.75 per month. Most households can easily afford this.
For under US$10, you even get a mourners bus and decent funeral cover, ensuring you or your loved ones are buried with dignity. You truly get what you pay for.
On the other hand, medical aids start at around US$10 and often aren't fit for purpose. When you get sick, you'll end up paying out of pocket. Policies in the mid-US$100 range are unaffordable for households earning US$150 per month. They also require visits to public hospitals and cover very limited tests. To get adequate coverage, you need to spend US$90 or more per person. How many can afford that?
