Just to reiterate what we mentioned last week, Zimbabweans opt for funeral policies because they are significantly cheaper compared to medical aid, not because they are uninformed.
Take, for example, the Maisha Packages (Econet's affiliated medical aid). The entry package costs US$8 per month and primarily gives access to Mission Hospitals and government-owned public hospitals. A consultation at these facilities is around US$10. Why pay US$8 monthly for medical aid when you can simply pay the cash price?
These hospitals typically do not perform basic tests like Full Blood Count, do not provide access to free medication, and often require long waiting periods—hours, days, weeks, or even years—to see a specialist.
In contrast, Ecosure (another Econet-affiliated entity) offers an entry package for only US$1.50, which provides a decent burial without burdening your loved ones with the hassle of arranging it. It’s a no-brainer really.
